About the Forum

The Web Content Managers Forum is the largest network of government web professionals in the United States. We're a vibrant and growing community, with over 1,400 members from federal, state, and local agencies across the country. Join the Forum to learn from your peers and stay informed about important issues and events.

Our Vision

Our goal is to dramatically improve U.S. Government websites. We do this by sharing our expertise and best practices, collaborating across agencies to reduce duplication, and striving to improve the online experience for the American public.  We've been working together since October 2000. Read more about our vision in our strategic plan.

Our Members

We are web professionals employed by federal, state, and local government agencies. Many of us work in Communications, Public Affairs, Policy, and Deputy Secretaries' offices, while some of us are members of are CIO staff. While our primary focus is on web content, many of us also handle the technical aspects of managing government websites. We have diverse areas of expertise, including web management, writing and editing, user-centered web design, social media, software development, search engine optimization, web analytics, and more.

How to Join

The Forum is open to web content managers who are government employees (civil servants and government contractors with a government emaill address), from any level of the U.S. government: federal, state, local, or tribal. To join, visit our registration page.

We are not able to admit private citizens or contractors, or web professionals from other countries.

Our Activities

Our community supports many activities:

  • Our professional networking website, launched in October 2008. Create your own professional profile, easily search for other government web managers, participate in discussion forums (“community blogs”), post calendar items and news stories, and read about training and other events. Read more on our FAQs page.

  • Monthly conference calls, held on the third Thursday of every month, from 11 AM - 12 PM ET. We discuss timely issues that we're facing; find solutions to common problems; and hear new, innovative strategies from across government.

  • WebContent.gov, the authoritative source for managing your website and the “parent” site for this professional networking site. Use WebContent.gov to make sure you're complying with requirements and meeting best practices.

  • Web Manager University, providing practical and affordable training targeted to government web professionals. You'll learn from the world's leading experts in web management. Classes are held in Washington, DC, and via online webinars. Read more about Web Manager University.

  • Community task groups, which are open to any Forum member. Groups share ideas and develop resources in a variety of areas. Learn more about our task groups.

  • Federal Web Managers Council, which provides strategic direction and leadership for the entire Forum network. It's comprised of the web directors at each federal cabinet department and other key agencies. Read more about the Federal Web Managers Council.
  • Annual conference and best practice awards, the largest gathering of government web professionals in the country, held every spring. Look for conference details on the community calendar.
  • Preparations for the 2008-2009 Presidential Transition, which include sharing experiences and resources across agencies so we’re all prepared for the major changes ahead.  Includes publication of the Federal Web Managers White Paper, which makes specific recommendations to the new Administration for transforming online government.
  •  In the News
Occasionally we find ourselves in the news! Read Media Mentions of Government Web for articles about our government web work and interviews with members of our government web community.
